How to crochet basket weave cowl

Designed by: Kinjinlu Khumba

Hey beautiful souls! Its another day to be grateful and I’m here to share a very special free pattern with you. The idea for this cowl was born in a rather unexpected situation. I had made a half sweater with the basket weave pattern for my 5 year old nephew. Yet it was too big because somehow I could also fit into it. But it was a very tight fit for me, so I couldn’t wear it nor he. So I unravel all the stitches back and when it was just about the size of a cowl, the yarn got stuck and I had to cut the yarn. Suddenly that’s where I saw that it could be used as a cowl. Somehow, I’m grateful I had to tear down my work to see another came out of its ruins. So there’s the story of how this cowl came into being.  I hope you like what you made with this pattern.

Abbreviations: (US terminology)

dc – double crochet

fpdc – front post double crochet

bpdc – back post double crochet

slp st – slip stitch

ch – chain

Supply:

1) 3.5 – 4 mm hook

2) Yarns of your choice

3) Scissors or any thread cutter

4) Wide-eye needle to sew in the ends

Construction:

Ch in the multiple of 6 for how long you want your cowl to be. + 1 ch at the end. For my cowl, I ch 120+1.

Make sure the ch is not twisted and join it with the first ch.

Row 1: ch3, (counts as dc), 1dc all around. Join the round with a slp st onto the top of ch3.

Row 2-4: Ch3, (3 fpdc, 3 bpdc) all around. Join the round with a slp st onto the top of ch3.

Row 5-7: Ch3, (3 bpdc, 3 fpdc) all around. Join the round with a slp st onto the top of ch3.

Its an alternating 3 row repeat of fpdc and bpdc.

Repeat Row 2-7 for how wide you want your cowl to be. My cowl continued till Row 24.

Fasten off and hide the tails.

So that’s how this very simple cowl is constructed.

If you make one, please let me know how it turned out. Tag me on my social media pages like Instagram and Facebook. Also check out other free pattern tutorials on YouTube. I’ll link this very tutorial here if you want to check out.

Note: Please do make sure that you make it with the same tension in your hands. Otherwise, the project could grow unevenly wide and would not bear desirable results. Hope you learn something new today. All the best. Happy Crochet!
